Notre Dame Spring Practice Video

First look Ishaq, Lynch, Golson from Irish Illustrated on Vimeo.

It's always good to get a look at some of the instant impact freshmen who are coming in to Notre Dame. First the video has #1 Ishaq Williams who will get a chance to crack the 2 deep at outside linebacker. Ishaq looks the part as he has the size of a college player already and at 6-5, 242 pound he doesn't have much growing to do. Just a hunch but I think we will see a lot of Ishaq this fall starting with the season opener against South Florida.

#19 Aaron Lynch also passes the eyeball test. Physically he is 6-6, 260 pound and the defensive end will put on some more weight and strength as spring progresses. I can see him being a solid backup to Kapron Lewis-Moore and Ethan Johnson this fall at the end position and picking up a half dozen sacks in passing situations.

#5 Everett Golson is basically the 4th string QB right now. The 6-0, 180 pound QB brings back fond memories of Tony Rice. He's got some time to learn the offense and I could definitely see Brian Kelly putting in some plays specifically designed for Golson to spread out the offense and make it run a little east-to-west while doing some quick reads.

All 3 of these freshmen have a chance to make some sort of impact for the Fighting Irish in 2011. I'd expect to see Ishaq and Lynch almost immediately in the season opener where Bob Diaco likes to get fresh bodies rotated in the defense. Both are speed guys who could make a future NFL living getting to the quarterback. Golson could be a while till we see him play but I would think Kelly has something up his sleeve. Right now Dayne Crist who is coming back from yet another knee surgery will probably be the starter with Tommy Rees and Andrew Hendrix backing him up. Golson brings a good mixture of speed, athleticism, and quick release that puts him in a different category than the other 3 QB's. His inexperience though at the college level will take time and I wouldn't be shocked at all to see him redshirt if and it's a big if Dayne can make it through the whole season healthy.

Michael Floyd arrested for DUI

With Spring football just around the corner the last thing the Notre Dame football program needed was a star football player arrested. Unfortunately Notre Dame just lost it's best player in returning senior wideout Michael Floyd who was arrested Saturday night for drinking and driving.

WSBT has confirmed star Notre Dame football player Michael Floyd was arrested over the weekend for drinking and driving.

Sgt. Bill Redman, St. Joseph County Police public information officer, confirmed Floyd was booked into the county jail just after 4 a.m. Sunday.

Floyd was released from jail about seven hours later after posting a $500 bond.

Redman says Notre Dame Security Police arrested Floyd on campus.

A court date is set for May 2, Redman said, clarifying his earlier report of an April 2 court date.

Losing Floyd next season due to a suspension would be a huge blow for the Notre Dame offense. Floyd is one of the top 3 wide receivers in the college game and honestly is not replaceable. It was a huge shock when he decided to come back for his senior season and skip the NFL draft. This DUI arrest is of equal in shock value considering Floyd is a senior captain who is suppose to lead by example for a Fighting Irish team that is a sleeper for a BCS Bowl run in the fall. This isn't Floyd's first offense with drinking either. He was cited for underage drinking in his hometown of Minneapolis 14 months ago. A fight was involved.

If I had to take a guess I think head coach Brian Kelly will suspend Floyd for at least 2 games with a possibility of 6 games max. A suspension isn't a possibility at this point. It's a reality especially at a school like Notre Dame. Starting fullback Rashon Powers-Neal was suspended the rest of his senior year after he was caught for DUI midway through the 2005 season. Other players with past offenses were basically kicked out of the school. It will be interesting to see how Notre Dame handles the situation. Michael Floyd fucked up and he fucked up pretty bad. Now one can only hope he learns from his mistake and has a chance at redemption this fall.

Here is what the Notre Dame du Lac handbook (think of it as the rules all students must follow at Notre Dame) says in regards to alcohol offenses.

Regarding drinking and driving:
Driving Under the Influence of
Alcohol or Drugs
The University prohibits the operation of a motor vehicle while intoxicated
or impaired. Any person doing so exhibits wanton disregard for
the rights and safety of others.
For purposes of this policy, “driving under the influence” is
defined as a situation in which the operator of any motorized vehicle
is determined by admission, by testing for blood alcohol content or
by commonly accepted behavioral observations (e.g., slurred speech,
staggering, etc.) to be driving such vehicle after having consumed
alcoholic beverages or ingested other drugs or legally controlled
substances which may alter, inhibit or impair a person’s condition
of thought and action.

Also for purposes of this policy, a first offense is a first-time
violation of the “driving under the influence” policy. A second
offense is a second violation of the “driving under the influence”
policy or a first-time violation of this policy with at least one
previous violation of the intoxication policy.
I. Violations and Sanctions
a. First offense: If a student is determined to have violated
this policy, the Office of Residence Life and Housing will:
1. Place the student on Disciplinary Probation for at
least one semester.
2. Require the student to participate in an alcohol
assessment at an appropriate assessing agency and
undertake alcohol education according to the
assessor’s determination.
3. Require the student to forfeit all University vehicle
registration and campus driving/parking privileges
for at least one semester.
4. Require the student to pay an appropriate monetary
fine or perform equivalent community service.

Since this is Floyd's first DUI it would constitute a first violation of "driving under the influence" and since they are still in the spring semester his probation could start now and go into the summer semester. If I'm reading the 4 points right Floyd would basically be subject to probation, alcohol classes, forfeit driving privileges, and pay a fine with some community service. It does not state expulsion from the school which is obviously huge. Best case scenario is Floyd does not participate in spring practice while he finishes up his obligations for first time offender during the summer semester and is thus granted full eligibility starting in the fall.

Jim Tressel continues to dot the i in LIAR

I was on vacation last week when the whole "Jim Tressel lied about not knowing his 5 players committed infractions" story broke. I honestly didn't think too much of it. I just figured the Sweatervest has lied about a lot of things since he came to Columbus. It's not necessarily his fault. It's part of the game. Literally there are so many fucking NCAA rules that if an athlete takes a shit without contacting Tressel on whether he wiped his ass 2 or...wait for it...3 times then the NCAA could see it as a violation.

Listen I don't like Ohio State. But I hate the NCAA even more. If a player wants to sell his own jersey for money then let them. If a player wants to exchange their own jersey for tattoo's then let them. It's their own fucking property as soon as Ohio State gives it to them. I thought the A.J. Green suspension was bull shit and I think the 5 players for Ohio State being suspended is bull shit. It's a dumb ass rule and the only reason it is around is because the NCAA doesn't want anybody profiting off anything college related unless they have their dirty fingers in it. They are the biggest hypocrites in the world. A college athlete can't sell his image or likeness for money while playing yet the schools and the NCAA can profit off those players by putting them on billboards, commercials, and jerseys. And yeah I get it that they get a free education, food, clothes and room and board but some schools are literally making 100's of millions off certain athletes. Everybody knows Cam Newton was worth the 180K to Auburn. The guy brought in millions to Auburn.

But anyways enough of the NCAA rant. Tressel has now upped his suspension to 5 games instead of the 2 he initially was suspended for. Here is what he said today...

"Throughout this entire situation, my players and I have committed ourselves to facing our mistakes and growing from them; we can only successfully do this together," he said in a statement. "I spoke with athletic director [Gene] Smith, and our student-athletes involved, and told them that my mistakes need to share the same game sanctions."

First off he is lying. Bold face. The "players and I have committed ourselves to facing our mistakes and growing from them" is complete and utter bull shit. Tressel knew the players committed an infraction and hid it from the University's compliance department and the NCAA. That isn't facing your mistake throughout the entire situation. That is running and hiding from it. So Tressel is about as trustworthy as Lane Kiffin is right now. He knows he broke the rules but as long as he didn't get caught he would still be coaching. In other words he is not a very good leader or example right now for the Ohio State football program. His track record with wins and losses is fantastic and you can't discount the winning attitude he has brought to Columbus since leaving Youngstown State. The Buckeyes struggled for national prominence and couldn't even beat arch rival Michigan before Tressel arrived. Now they dominate the Big Ten and destroy Michigan every single year and compete in BCS Bowl games because of Tressel. But like Dez Bryant faced when he lied to the NCAA I believe Tressel should be suspended for the whole season if the NCAA is going to follow their protocol. If a student-athlete lies about knowing something the NCAA hammers them. They should do the same with the coaches in my opinion.

In the big picture this whole story is more of a witch hunt for Tressel's head. Tressel knew about the infractions back in April of 2010 when he was notified by Columbus lawyer of the 5 player's infractions for the tattoo's in exchange for jerseys. He didn't notify anybody because all 5 of those players are major parts of his program. Suspending them last season would probably have meant the Buckeyes wouldn't have been in the Sugar Bowl. So he hoped it went away. It didn't. The player's infraction isn't even bad in my opinion. Tressel lying about it the whole time and trying to avoid the subject is worst than what the players did. And for this Tressel should be suspended for the whole season if the NCAA wants to "uphold it's integrity*" of the game.

The new Adidas commercial has Notre Dame in it...not Michigan

Sorry Michigan. You couldn't cut it for the newest Adidas commercial. I think I saw a quick glance of a Wolverines helmet in there. Unfortunately it was when Notre Dame tight end Kyle Rudolph was reaching for the goal line and Michigan defenders were dropping like flies. Sucks to be a Wolverine.

Snoop Dogg killed it and The Situation bombed at the Roast of Donald Trump

It wasn't the same without Greg Giraldo there but the Roast of Donald Trump had some knockdown laugh out loud moments. One of the best was Snoop Dogg just straight out killing it. Who knew Snoop could be so fucking funny? Snoop's Jeffrey Ross jokes were hysterical. It was great to see him tear up The Situation. I know a lot of people love The Jersey Shore but I personally think it is one of the worst shows ever. It's not even remotely funny. It's just a bunch of talentless redneck guidos doing laundry. Great concept.

R.I.P NATE DOGG

The smooth and soulful Nate Dogg passed away yesterday at the age of 41. Regulators was his major hit back in the mid 90's and it was one of those tunes you couldn't get out of your head. The flow and melody to the song was G-Funk like. Just listening to it now makes me want to roll a fatty, kick back and reflect on life.

UAB +5 over Clemson
I know Clemson comes from a power conference in the ACC but did you actually watch it this year? It was terrible with the exception of Duke and North Carolina. Going 9-7 in the ACC conference is like UCONN in football going 6-4 in the Big East. It's no big deal. The UAB Blazers on the other hand have heard all about how they don't deserve a spot in the tournament and how Virginia Tech or some other loser team should have gotten in over them. The winner of this 12 seed vs 12 seed game gets West Virginia on Thursday. Take UAB with the points as the dog and if you are feeling really lucky take them with the outright win and the odds pay 3-to-1.

Prediction: UAB 66 Clemson 64

Milwaukee Bucks vs Atlanta Hawks -5
The Bucks are garbage and the Hawks for the most part kick ass at home. Atlanta hasn't been playing it's greatest ball of late but they can handle the Bucks. This game won't be close. Al Horford and Joe Johnson are going to destroy the Bucks.

Great March Madness Moments in Legos

Tauntr.com had this rather brilliant recreation of March Madness moments lego-lized. I watched the "Fab 5" documentary on ESPN last night and seeing Chris Webber call the time out still makes me laugh. The guy would talk so much shit to opponents but when he failed he would just cower and not answer questions. Personally I had no problem with the Fab 5 even though they were a Michigan team. I generally liked Jalen Rose because he had a swagger and I thought the Fab 5 was great for college basketball. It's just too bad Chris Webber fucked it all up for them on the court with the idiotic timeout and off by taking money (over $250,000) and still won't answer questions or apologize for what he did. For a big man C-Webb looked like a little bitch the way he came off in the documentary. Maybe in 2013 when he is reinstated by the NCAA he will man up and admit he fucked up.

Tommy Zbikowski moves to 2-0 with 1st Round TKO

This obviously wasn't as impressive as his first professional fight 4 years ago but Baltimore Raven's safety Tommy Zbikowski still delivered a powerful left hand hook to tomato can Richard Ryant's upper chest for the first round TKO. With the NFL Lockout in full force Zibby will have a chance to fight again in less than a month. The venue will be in Atlantic City.

Bring on the NCAA Tourney and Gus Johnson

Just hearing CBS Play-by-play announcer Gus Johnson scream "COLD BLOODED" gets me all tingly and hard. It's that time of the year again folks. NCAA March fucking Madness. Yesterday they announced the brackets and looking at them at first glance I don't really see anybody who got hosed. The Tourney is going to be wide open. Some of the favorites (please be Duke!) will get knocked out early and you know there will be at least a couple of Cinderella's who make it to the Elite Eight. Bring it on!
